The Vona Du Toit College was incorporated in to the University of Pretoria in 1982. Due to educational reforms in medical education there was a need to review the Occupational Therapy curriculum during the 1990’s, considering relevant national regulations and legislative influences which impact upon Occupational Therapists working in South Africa. The need for Occupational therapy students to be equipped to deliver vocational rehabilitation services for people with disabilities is deemed essential.
Following a successful introduction of a Problem- Based Learning approach within the vocational rehabilitation modules at the University the authors of this article provide a detailed description of the course content.
The Pretoria Integrated Curriculum for Occupational Therapy, consisting of four years’ study, is initially described including course content of teaching modules and fieldwork practise. The article then outlines the vocational rehabilitation module in greater detail, outlining the content of each week with specified learning themes and assessment methods.
The Problem-Based Learning approach is relevant to Occupational Therapy as it specifically develops clinical reasoning, critical thinking and problem solving. Feedback received from Occupational Therapy students following graduation was positive with students feeling confident and skilled in executing work practise skills. The Problem-Based Learning approach was effective and the authors hope that this article enables other educators to adopt this approach within other Universities.
