Initiative in Occupational Therapy.

By du Toit, V

A paper detailing Vona du Toit’s original thinking underpinning the VdTMoCA and the role of the occupational therapist in successful treatment.  Starting with basic principles, du Toit describes the innate activity and purpose of man and the resulting occupational therapy philosophy.  Drawing upon literature and theorists of the time, concepts influencing man’s attitudes and relatedness are explored in order to frame the responsibility of the occupational therapist.  The concept of initiative is explored, again drawing on theorists of the time, and is used to conclude the importance of therapeutic use of self in treatment and rehabilitation.
