This paper provides a useful overview of creative ability and associated concepts for the reader. Du Toit starts with recognition that the value of a treatment or procedure must be evaluated against a set standard to measure results in treatment. She suggests that based on the concept that creative ability recovers or re-emerges in sequential stages, it is possible to thus evaluate the results of a treatment aimed at restoring creative ability or volition in patients. The fundamental principle of creative ability having sequential stages of psychical development is explained and key terms such as creative capacity, creative response, creative participation, creative act and creative ability are defined. Du Toit details 6 stages of psychical development (tone, self-differentiation self-presentation, participation, contribution and competitive contribution) considering aspects such as relational components towards materials and people, creative responses and action.
